Care for Zircon

Care for Zircon

Zircon has a hardness of around 6-7.5 on the MOHS scale. It has a fair to good toughness quality however, it can be brittle and is not as hard as a stone compared to sapphire. It comes in an array of colors such as blue, orange, green, yellow, honey, brown, and red but also comes out as colorless which is used to imitate the look of a diamond. So if you want to maintain the brilliance of this gemstone, here are some tips:

  1. Warm and soapy water are recommended when cleaning your Zircon jewelry.
  2. Use a soft bristle toothbrush and clean the dirt off gently to avoid any damage.
  3. If you prefer a soaking method, mix mild detergent in a bowl of lukewarm water and soak your jewelry pieces in the mixture for about 3 to 5 minutes.
  4. Ultrasonic and steam cleaners, bleaches, and strong detergents should be avoided.
  5. Dry it completely with a soft cloth after washing before storing it away.
  6. Wrap it in a cloth and store it in air-tight containers as humidity can harm the stone.
  7. Avoid wearing it when you have a thick layer of moisturizer or body oil applied to your skin as it can affect the quality of the gemstone.
  8. Have it clean at least once a month and stick to your cleaning routine.
  9. Reach out to a professional if it needs a thorough inspection and cleaning.
